Speed limits vary across the country from Delaware where the maximum highway speed is 55 MPH to Texas where the maximum highway speed in 85 miles per hour. In the map above you can see which states have the highest speed limits. The map shows that the less densely populated states in the west tend to have a higher speed limit.

Speed limits listed here to not indicate the universal highway speed or even the standard highway speed in each state. These are only the maximum speed limits. For instance, most of Texas has a 75 mph speed limit and only a few select stretches of highway have an 85 mph speed limit.

A few states set different highway speed limits for trucks and cars. In the table below you can see the max speed limits for both cars and trucks in each state. The rates are the same in 42 of the 50 states + Washington, DC.
